Ukraine and Japan prepare new mine action formats with Colombia and Syria

The initiative could open foreign markets for Ukrainian demining operators and specialized equipment producers

Ukraine is working with Japan on new trilateral formats in humanitarian mine action with Colombia and Syria. The idea is to turn Ukraine’s wartime demining experience into practical cooperation with countries that also face long-term contamination and recovery challenges.

The plan was discussed during the first official visit of JICA Vice President Yuko Mitsui to Ukraine. According to Ukraine’s economic and environmental authorities, the format may create new opportunities for Ukrainian mine action operators and domestic producers of specialized equipment.

From experience to exportable expertise

Ukraine has had to build mine action capacity under extreme pressure. That experience now includes field procedures, digital planning, risk assessment, operator training and integration of foreign technologies into local production.

Japan’s role is important because cooperation with JICA is focused not only on equipment supplies, but also on smart demining, soil recovery, support for small farmers, clean technologies and recycling of debris from destruction.

A wider investment track

The parties are also discussing blended financing through Ukraine’s national development institution so Ukrainian companies can acquire advanced Japanese equipment. Japan is interested in a venture fund for joint Ukrainian-Japanese enterprises.

Another track is promotion of Ukrainian investment opportunities in Japan, including work with UkraineInvest, JETRO and JICA on a hub in Osaka. If implemented well, mine action cooperation can become both a humanitarian tool and an industrial niche for Ukrainian technology companies.
