Ukraine has registered artichoke varieties for the first time. According to Av Licht, two Spanish-bred varieties, Lorca and Tupac, have been entered into the State Register of Plant Varieties Suitable for Distribution in Ukraine.
The event is small in volume but important for niche agriculture. Official registration gives farmers a clearer legal basis for seed use, commercial cultivation and future scaling of a crop that remains almost absent from Ukrainian fields.
A niche with room to grow
Artichoke cultivation in Ukraine is still limited to very small areas. Earlier market estimates put the crop at only a few hectares nationwide, while lack of experience, agronomic knowledge and stable demand has held back expansion.
At the same time, niche vegetables can be attractive for small farms, restaurants, local processing and premium fresh produce channels. Registration of varieties does not automatically create a market, but it reduces one barrier for producers that want to diversify away from standard crops.
For investors and farmers, the key question will be whether Ukrainian producers can build technology, storage, logistics and consumer demand around this crop. If that happens, artichoke may become one of the small but visible examples of agricultural diversification.
