In Rivne, there is the first nuclear power plant in Ukraine with water nuclear reactors. But soon there will be 3 units at the nuclear plant. It will be built using new technology. The basis will be the American development of the AP1000 from the company Westinghouse. This means that Ukraine will have a two-circuit water reactor (PWR) with an electric capacity of 1100 MW. Such a reactor could replace two existing units, which will be phased out between 2030 and 2031.
Ukraine and Westinghouse plan to build together 9 similar power units. 2 of them have already started to build in the Khmelnytsky region. Commissioning of the reactor is expected in 2029.
The project in Rivne also has already started. The press service of the state nuclear power generation company Energoatom reported that the facility assessed the level of water resources in the area of the NPP, and analyzed the existing infrastructure and interconnections of the western region of the power system of Ukraine. The power unit's completion and the system's first launch are planned for 2032.
It should be noted that since July, the plant in Rivne has given up Russian fuel. Now the power unit uses American nuclear fuel.
