On 4 June, the Russian military continued to conduct active hostilities in the Donetsk region. The war criminals shelled the Svyatohirsk monastery. It is the biggest wooden skete of Ukraine. Therefore, after hitting Russian shells, the church caught fire. Four priests have already been killed. The number of casualties left inside is not yet known, as the fire has not yet been extinguished. However, according to the President of Ukraine, 300 people, including 60 children, were hiding in the temple.
It is not the first time that the monastery has become a refuge for people who do not want to live according to the rules of Russia. In the summer of 2014, the monastery received 800 people evacuating from the war zone (Donetsk and Luhansk regions), including 300 children.
So maybe Russia is just out for revenge?
A second well-founded reason for revenge might be the recent statement by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
"We expect a logical and fair response from the UN and UNESCO. It is the United Nations and its charter that do not provide for association with terrorists. Russia’s isolation must be complete, it must answer for its crimes," Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy reacted to the tragedy.
It should be noted that the Russians have already bombed and shelled Svyatohirsk, Svyatohirsk Lavra, and villages near it several times. Last time, two monks and a nun died.
