On February 16, the leader of the British opposition, Labour member Keir Starmer, arrived in Ukraine. Before his meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Starmer visited Bucha/Irpin and was shocked by what he saw.
"It’s incredible to see the evidence of atrocities that I’ve seen this morning. Photographs of civilians in the outskirts of Kyiv blindfolded, with their arms tied behind their back", Keir Starmer.
As The Guardian writes, the politician came to Ukraine to demonstrate Labour's support for arms supplies to Ukraine, as well as to emphasise solidarity with the ruling conservative party when it comes to supporting Ukraine.
"(Labour) doesn’t just hope for Ukrainian victory, we believe in it."
"I’ve said throughout this conflict there will be no difference between the political parties on this, so we will continue to work with the government to see what further support we can provide."
The president and the parliamentarian discussed holding Russia accountable for its war crimes. Starmer emphasised that Putin would bear the punishment personally through the tribunal. And Russia will respond economically — its state assets will be transferred to the reconstruction of Ukraine.
"There has to be justice for this. There has to be justice in The Hague and there has to be proper reparation in the rebuilding of Ukraine," Keir Starmer.
It is noteworthy that at one time, Keir Starmer was a barrister in The Hague, representing victims of Serbian aggression.
"We in this house have a duty to stand on the shoulders of giants and support Ukraine's fight for freedom, liberty and victory," said Starmer.
