Ukraine targets new export markets for higher-value agrifood products

The export agenda goes beyond grain by focusing on poultry, pork, processed food and certification for Asian and global markets

Ukraine is working to open more foreign markets for agricultural products, with a stronger focus on goods that create higher value inside the country. Agriculture already forms more than half of national exports, but the next stage is not only about selling larger volumes of raw commodities. It is about market access, certification, processing and stronger positions in food categories with more income retained by Ukrainian producers.

Priority destinations include Japan, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, the United States and Vietnam. These markets are attractive, but they require detailed technical work: veterinary and phytosanitary approvals, product certificates, audits, labeling rules and negotiations for individual categories.

Why added value matters

Ukraine is already known globally for wheat, corn, sunflower oil and soybeans. Those products remain essential for food security and export revenue. However, poultry, pork, processed foods and other higher-value categories can create more jobs, support processing plants and reduce dependence on commodity cycles.

The country has already opened multiple new markets in recent years, and more than three hundred export directions remain in progress at different stages. Some are close to certificate approval, while others require longer market-access procedures. This work is slow, but it builds a foundation for more diversified agricultural trade.

For producers, the opportunity comes with obligations. Access to demanding markets requires traceability, stable quality, reliable volumes and the ability to pass inspections. For the state, the task is to coordinate diplomacy, regulators and business so that market openings turn into real shipments. If that happens, Ukraine’s role in global food trade can become broader than raw commodity supply.
