Imported cheese pressure reshapes Ukraine dairy market

Cheese imports exceed exports several times over, while butter, milk and cream imports also add pressure

Ukraine’s dairy market is entering a more difficult phase, especially in cheese. June imports exceeded four thousand nine hundred tonnes and were four and a half times larger than exports, showing strong foreign competition on domestic shelves.

What changes

European suppliers, including Polish producers, are increasing pressure in consumer cheese categories. Ukrainian producers must compete not only with price, but also with retail promotions, accumulated inventories and established import logistics.

Business impact

The imbalance is broader than cheese. Butter imports are growing, while drinking milk and liquid cream are also moving toward import dominance. Whey remains export-positive, but the advantage is shrinking.

Investment signal

The investment signal is mixed. Fermented dairy exports are improving, yet the domestic market is exposed to stronger European competition. Ukrainian processors need efficiency, branding, product differentiation and export channels to protect margins.
