In June 2021, Zelenskyy signed a decree, the purpose of which is to green the country by 1 million ha in 10 years. Despite the war, during this year, Ukrainian foresters planted 109 million trees out of the planned 70 million. Unfortunately, some of these trees were planted to replace the forest destroyed by the Russian war. The State forest agency of Ukraine managed to plant almost 15.28 ha of forests, of which 702 hectares are new.
The most significant number of trees planted in the following regions:
- Zhytomyr — 25.47 million seedlings;
- Rivne — 20.2 million;
- Kyiv — 12.04 million;
- Volyn — 7.88 million.
In addition, Ukrainian foresters have done a fantastic job in the de-occupied territories of Ukraine: new trees are now growing into the soil of the Sumy, Chernihiv and Mykolaev regions.
The State forestry agency of Ukraine plans to expand new selection and seed centres in Zhytomyr, Khmelnytsky and Kyrovohrad regions. It is expected to create new centres in the Volyn, Transcarpathian, Ivano-Frankivsk, Kyiv, Sumy and Chernihiv regions and expand in the Ternopil region.
