Ukrainian Church Switches to the New Julian Calendar

From September 1, 2023, the Ukrainian Greek-catholic church will stop using the Julian calendar

The church responded to the opinion of Ukrainian believers and decided to change the liturgical calendar. Thus, Ukrainians to turn on the new Julian calendar.

Head of the Greek-catholic church in Ukraine beatitude Svyatoslav, said that Christmas will be officially postponed to December 25. It should be noted that in 2022 some Ukrainians celebrate Christmas on December 25, before the church decision. The generous evening (evening on the eve of the "old" New Year) is officially postponed to December 31. Epiphany day, when people dive into the cold water to wash away sins and find health, will be January 6 instead of January 19. However, the church retains the way of determining the Easter date – it remains "floating": the 1st Sunday after the spring full Moon.

Ukrainian church people also have the right to move smoothly to the new calendar – they may celebrate on the Julian calendar by 2025.
