Ukraïner is a project of the Ukrainian news portal Ukrainer, which promotes Ukrainian culture and historical heritage, and tells about Ukraine and Ukrainians. Notably, the project bears the letter ï in its name — a distinctive and unique feature of the Ukrainian language. Since 2016, Ukraïner photographers and journalists have been travelling around the country and publishing amazing material about the beauty and originality of our country. Books and other content have been translated into dozens of languages so that everyone has access to Ukrainian.
At the beginning of the war, a family from Ukraine, fleeing from Russian aggression, took with them Inside Ukraine: A Portrait of a Country and its People by Ukraïner. The sponsors of this family turned out to be Barsford publicist Polly Powel. The book that fell into Polly's hands stole her heart.
"This book came into my hands as a gift from the Ukrainian family I was hosting in London. It, along with the mother and 2 girls, had travelled 30 hours to get to us via a bus, a train journey to the Polish border and then a flight from Krakow. They didn't know I was a book publisher, and my immediate interest was a surprise to them. It was obvious both that they needed to sleep and that the book needed to be published in the English-speaking world. It was written before the war, and it is a wonderful portrait of what it means to be Ukrainian," Polly Powell.
Now Inside Ukraine: A Portrait of a Country and its People is published by the English publishing house Barsford, and Ukrainian identity, nature and culture inspire UK readers.
