On August 7, the leader of UNESCO Ukraine, Chiara Dezzi Bardeschi, reported that the organisation recommended adding 2 Kyiv cathedrals and the city centre of Lviv to the list of world historical heritage, as they are under threat of destruction or damage due to Russia's devastating war.
"This is the Cathedral of St Sophia and the adjacent monastic buildings, the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra in Kyiv, as well as the ensemble of the historical centre of Lviv," Chiara Dezzi Bardeschi.
We remind you that on July 23, Russia carried out an attack against the historical centre of the city of Odesa and destroyed a church. Bardeschi reports that the damage caused by this attack is worst than it seemed at first glance. Today, the UNESCO mission in Ukraine records all Russian attacks on the cultural heritage of Ukraine and will compile all the data for a general report in December. This report will be submitted as one of the arguments against Russia in the Hague court.
According to incomplete data and UNESCO, the Russian war in Ukraine caused damage of varying degrees of severity to 117 objects of religious importance, 27 museums, 98 historical buildings, 19 cultural monuments, 12 libraries, 1 archive.
