Ukraine sets new standards for canned mixed fruit products

Food producers receive clearer rules on fruit share, packaging fill and labeling, with a transition period for existing production

Ukraine is introducing clearer minimum standards for mixed fruit products in syrup and juice. The new rules define what such products may contain, how much fruit must be present and how packaging should be filled. For food producers, this is a compliance issue, but also a market-standard issue that affects consumer trust.

The core requirement is that fruit should represent at least sixty percent of the total product mass. Mixed fruit with syrup or juice must also fill at least ninety percent of the package volume. The drained fruit content must meet specific thresholds depending on how the fruit is cut and packed.

Why the standards matter

The aim is to reduce misleading presentation and create fairer conditions for producers that already maintain product quality. When rules are vague, cheaper formulations can compete with better products while looking similar on the shelf. Clearer composition and fill requirements make it harder to sell diluted or poorly filled products as equivalent goods.

For manufacturers, the new standards mean recipes, quality-control procedures, labels, technical documentation and packaging checks may need revision. Companies should compare current product specifications with the new requirements, review supplier contracts for fruit varieties and update internal control points on the production line.

The transition period gives businesses time to adapt and sell products made under older rules. Still, waiting until the end of that period would be risky. Food producers operate under constant regulatory pressure, including labeling, traceability, inspections and contractual liability. Early preparation reduces the chance of relabeling costs, warehouse disputes and problems during official checks.
